How to Repair Travertine Holes - Travertino HQ

The Official Travertino Restoration Guide

Follow these steps for a professional-grade, seamless stone repair.

1. Clean the Area

Start with a clean surface. Use a vacuum, small brush, or compressed air to remove all dust, loose debris, and oils from the holes or cracks. A clean void ensures the filler bonds permanently to the stone.

2. Mix the Powder

In a small container, blend the Light and Dark powders to match your stone's dry color. Slowly add water while stirring until you achieve a thick, "peanut butter" or putty-like consistency.

3. Wait 5 Minutes

Important: Let the mixture sit undisturbed for 5 minutes. This allows the minerals to fully hydrate and activate. After 5 minutes, remix the paste thoroughly without adding any more water.

4. Apply the Filler

Using a wood stick or a putty knife, press the mixture firmly into the voids. Apply enough pressure to ensure the filler reaches the bottom of the pit or crack.

5. Scrape and Refill

Scrape off any excess filler from the tile surface while it is still wet. Inspect the area; if the filler settles or if you spot tiny "pinholes" or empty areas, apply a small amount of additional mixture to ensure the repair is flush with the stone.

6. Allow to Dry

Let the product sit undisturbed. The surface will begin to harden and the color will lighten as the moisture evaporates. Avoid walking on or touching the repaired area during this phase.

7. Clean Surface Residue

Once the filler is firm but not fully cured, use a dampened sponge or towel to gently wipe away any remaining haze or residue from the surrounding tile. Do not use a dripping wet sponge, as too much water can wash the filler out of the hole.

8. Full Cure

Allow the repair to cure for a full 24 hours before subjected to heavy foot traffic, moisture, or routine floor cleaning. This ensures a rock-hard, permanent bond.

Pro-Tips for the Perfect Finish:

  • Dry Matching: Always get your color right while the powder is dry. It will look darker when wet but will return to the dry powder color once fully cured.

  • Less is More: It is easier to add a few drops of water than it is to fix a mixture that is too runny. Aim for a stiff putty.
